JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format. It defines a structure for exchanging JPEG image data. A JFIF file is a raster image, not a document or vector graphic; changing its extension does not change the picture’s contents.
What is JFIF, and what is inside the file?
The JFIF format supplies conventions around JPEG-compressed image data, including pixel density and aspect ratio information. JPEG describes how the picture is compressed; JFIF helps applications interpret and exchange that picture. The JFIF specification describes this structure.
A JFIF file can use .jfif, while JPEG images also commonly use .jpg or .jpeg. An extension is a label for applications, not a quality setting. It cannot tell you whether an image is sharp, damaged, or carrying location metadata.
What is a JFIF file used for?
A JFIF file can contain a photograph, scanned page, illustration, or other still image. You can view it, share it, or insert it into an app that accepts its contents and extension. If it already opens and uploads correctly, you do not need to convert it.
Problems often arise at a file picker that accepts .jpg but excludes .jfif. A readable JFIF file may only need a JPG copy with its original data preserved. An app that cannot decode the image may need a new encoding instead.
Why did a download have a .jfif extension?
The name alone does not identify why a particular website or browser saved a JFIF file. It also does not prove that anything is broken. First try opening the image and check that it is the picture you expected.

How to open a JFIF file
Start with a JPEG-compatible image viewer or a current browser. On a computer, use the app’s Open command; on a phone, locate the download in the Files app. A gallery may not list every downloaded image.

What conversion cannot fix
Converting a JFIF file cannot recover detail already lost through JPEG compression, remove a background, or repair missing image data. PNG and WebP may support transparency, but an opaque source keeps its visible background after conversion.
If a JFIF file is empty or no application can read it, download it again or ask for a fresh export. Renaming a web page or unrelated file to .jfif does not make it a JPEG image.
